Conductivity Sensors
The conductivity measurement is a very useful and practical method,
especially for purposes of quality control. In general, it is a quick and
inexpensive way to determine the ionic strength of a solution proportional
to the combined effect of all present ions. Therefore, the conductivity has
a fundamental role in the control of purity of water in steam generating
systems, control of drinking water and quality processes where it is necessary
to estimate the total number of ions in a solution. The high reliability,
speed and relatively low cost instrumentation conductivity make it a basic
parameter in any good monitoring program. Some applications are measured in
units of resistivity, which is the inverse of the conductivity. Other
applications require the measurement of total dissolved solids (TDS), which
is related to the conductivity by a factor dependent on the level and type of
present ions. Conductivity measurements are performed in different situations
of ion concentration, and may be performed in ultra-pure water, where the
values are close to zero, even in very concentrated solution, such as seawater.
